il suffit de regarder le e a de publications portant de pr`s ou de loin sur ces explosions stellaires e pour s'en convaincre. a toutes les ´chelles, elles apparaissent comme centrales : e certaines d'entre elles, les supernovae de type ia, sont consid´r´es comme chanee delles cosmiques et indicateurs de distance. tout chercheur e ee travaillant sur la structure et l'´volution galactique ne peut n´gliger leur impact e e en terme d'´quilibres chimique et radiatif dans le milieu interstellaire. m^me ` e e a ´chelles, nous nous sentons redevables envers ces explosions c´lestes, forges e e des noyaux qui nous composent. leurs abondances observ´es a aujourd'hui dans les ob jets astronomiques tels que le syst`me solaire, les ´toiles, le milieu e e interstellaire, ou bien encore les rayons cosmiques, r´sultent de l'effet cumul´ de processus e e nucl´aires complexes ant´rieurs.1 abondances dans le syst`me solaire et dans le rayonnement cosmique. de l'hydrog`ne ´tait donc produit constama ee ment au cours du temps, et celui-ci ´tait peu ` peu transform´ en h´lium puis en ´l´ments e a e ee plus lourds exclusivement au coeur des ´toiles. la fraction d'h´lium ou des autres ´l´ments e e ee lourds relativement ` celle de l'hydrog`ne restait alors constante au cours du temps.5 ee e e milliards d'ann´es et servent depuis de combustible aux r´acteurs stellaires qui fabriquent e e l'essentiel des ´l´ments plus lourds 2 . |
| c'est donc au sein des coeurs stellaires que l'on trouve les e e conditions requises ` la formation des ´l´ments connus. mais cela n'est pas suffisant pour a expliquer les abondances cosmiques observ´es : il faut que les noyaux produits soient e relach´s dans le milieu interstellaire et ainsi incorpor´s sous la forme d'´toiles de nouvelle ^e e e g´n´ration, de rayons cosmiques, de m´t´orites, etc., dans lesquels nous observons ces ee ee abondances. de plus, puisque la plupart des processus nucl´aires ont lieu au cours des e derni`res ´tapes de l'´volution stellaire, dans les conditions les plus extr^mes de temp´rae e e e e ture et de pression, l'´tude des derniers instants de vie stellaires rev^t alors toute son e e importance. nier trouve pour les plus vieux ´chantillons de roche des ^ges de 2. |
| e e 2 le lithium (mis ` part le 7 li), le b´ryllium et le bore ont une origine spallative : ils proviennent de la a brisure des noyaux de carbone, azote et oxyg`ne sous l'impact du rayonnement cosmique (reeves et al. les supernovae ou bien encore les n´buleuses plan´taires repr´sentent le lien e e e intime entre ´toiles, sites de production, et milieu interstellaire, site de rel^chage des e a . un autre moyen efficace de mesurer a e les abondances cosmiques est l'observation des raies dans le domaine , qui permet une identification directe des noyaux mis en jeu. |
les noyaux radioactifs e e d´croissent naturellement en un ´tat excit´ du noyau-fils, ce dernier se d´sexcitant l` ene e e e a de mani`re radiative par l'´mission de raie. la plupart de ces noyaux sont produits exclusivement ou en e ea partie dans les supernovae, et leur signature observationnelle a ´ pr´dite et ´tudi´e il y ee e e e a de trente ans par clayton et al.) au sein desquels ces derniers se trouvent. il suffit e de les compter pour conna^tre le nombre d'isotopes mis en jeu et ainsi les taux de produci tion dans les sources observ´es. nous commen¸ons ainsi ` sentir le lien direct entre astronomie et ´tude e c a des supernovae, dans ce cadre g´n´ral qu'est l'histoire cosmique des noyaux. autre monde, celui de la physique des particules ! l'histoire du e rayonnement cosmique, aujourd'hui encore inachev´e, est l'une des plus passionnantes e dans l'histoire des sciences. |
| la probl´matique li´e aux sources de ce rayonnement se e e d´cline sous d'innombrables facettes et suscite de nombreuses et riches interrogations. les e e e physiciens du d´but du vingti`me si`cle ne comprenaient pas pourquoi les ´lectroscopes e e e e se d´chargeaient spontan´ment, et, pour d´montrer l'origine terrestre de ce myst´rieux e e e e rayonnement ionisant, le j´suite allemand th´odore wulf installa en 1909 un ´lectroscope e e e en haut de la tour eiffel. il constata alors que la diminution du taux de d´charge de son e ´lectroscope ´tait moindre que pr´vu en supposant que tout l'effet ionisant ´tait du ` un e e e e ^a rayonnement d'origine tellurique. leur origine n'est donc pas tellurique mais bien c´leste : la terre est e bombard´e en permanence par une pluie de particules ionisantes. avant m^me de p´n´trer dans l'environnement terrestre, les e e ee rayons cosmiques doivent alors porter une charge ´lectrique.. .. |
